Our agricultural friend, the honey bee, has been under attack from multiple sources leading to a critical decline in its numbers.
Chef Alan Wong is partnering with Prof. Lorna Tsutsumi of UH Hilo's College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management (CAFNRM) to educate the public about local food production and the need to reduce Hawaiʻi's dependency on imports.
Students at UH Hilo have been receiving training in practical beekeeping skills for over 30 years.
UH Hilo is promoting research and development of healthy beehive practices while producing a steady pipeline of experienced beekeepers.
The Adopt-a-Beehive with Alan Wong program assists UH Hilo students like Diana Mitchell and Kekoa Yasuda with support for their tuition expenses.
And the program helps purchase the supplies needed to keep UH Hilo’s vitally important beekeeping classes running.
Beehive adopters receive regular reports on their assigned beehive colonies, along with a personal supply of honey.
Dignitaries gathered at the UH Hilo Farm Laboratory on June 25 for the groundbreaking of the bee garden: Dean William Steiner (CAFNRM); Kekoa Yasuda (student beekeeper); Chancellor Don Straney; Dr. Lorna Tsutsumi (CAFNRM); State Rep. Clift Tsuji; Chef Alan Wong; and State Senator Gil Kahele (from left to right).
