Matching Opportunity Is Music To Maui's Ears

"Hawaiʻi is filled with talented musicians ranging from beach ukulele players to rock stars. Maui has its share of gifted young musicians who require stronger support to join the profession. The College secured U.S. Dept. of Labor funding and built a recording studio and appointed Grammy Award Winner George Kahumoku to serve as the first IHM director to meet this need."

Clyde Sakamoto, UH Maui College Chancellor

The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation has awarded UH Maui College's Institute of Hawaiian Music $200,000 to support budding Hawaiian musicians. This is a 1:1 challenge grant. Every $1 given by a donor to the Institute of Hawaiian Music will be matched with $1 from the Castle Foundation.

Students enrolled in IHM will gain hands-on skills and experience in performance, recording technology, marketing, and retail areas of the Hawaiian music industry, as well as study Hawaiian language and culture. They will be mentored by successful Hawaiian musicians like Herb Ohta Jr., Richard HoʻopiʻI, Kimo West, and Brother Noland.

"Thanks to the Harold K. L. Castle Foundation and the donors who join us in this exciting matching opportunity, students participating in IHM will be mentored by Hawaiian music masters, take classes in Hawaiian culture and language, and professionally record their music for release. This will help launch their own careers as musicians or music technicians," said program director, George Kahumoku Jr.
