  • Aloha Shoyu Extends Scholarship

Sydney Barney (L) and Cathlyn Goo (R)
from the Class of 2019 were named to receive
the 2016-17 academic year Aloha Shoyu scholarship.
Hawai‘i based soy sauce company Aloha Shoyu has extended its contribution to a scholarship fund to help pharmacy students in the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy.

The company, which makes soy sauce, vinegars and glazes, has funded a scholarship for pharmacy students since the 2011-12 academic year, when the first student to benefit was Denise D. Kobashikawa, Class of 2014. Since then, other students have received the scholarship including Kristi Anne Nishek (Class of 2015), Brandon Tuzon (Class of 2016), and Daniel Leong (Class of 2015).

Aloha Shoyu is operated by Brian Tanigawa, who grew up in Pearl City on O‘ahu and graduated from ‘Iolani School. He received his degree in pharmacy from Purdue University before DKICP opened its doors at UH Hilo in 2007.

“I think I would have considered staying closer to home,” he recalled. “But at the time, I was looking for more exposure and experience.”

Currently, Mr. Tanigawa resides in Las Vegas, Nevado, where the company recently completed a production facility that services mainland customers. The Tanigawa family was one of five families who started Aloha Shoyu in 1946 in Kalihi, O‘ahu. Today it is one of the market leaders in soy sauce sales in Hawai‘i and its products are sold in all 50 states.

“This is a very important partnership because it not only helps our students with costs such as tuition, books and fees but because of Mr. Tanigawa’s professional experience, we can discuss critical issues in health care,” DKICP Dean Carolyn Ma said.
