Cement and concrete have played an important role in creating solid infrastructures for Hawaiʻi’s man-made landscapes. Much like these materials, higher education helps create a strong foundation for a successful and long-lasting career, particularly in specialized fields such as engineering. The Cement and Concrete Products Industry of Hawaiʻi (CCPI) have reaffirmed their commitment to education by gifting $60,000 to the John S. Farmer Scholarship Endowment to support students at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa College of Engineering.

Named in honor of CCPI’s mastermind co-founder John S. Farmer, the scholarship assists students seeking a degree in civil engineering who are pursing the study of some aspect of cement, concrete or masonry research.

Throughout his career, John S. Farmer promoted the use of cement, concrete and masonry products as well as the benefits of local manufacturing, all of which still play an important role in Hawaiʻi’s engineering and construction industry. Farmer served as the first chairman of the board of directors and later as president of CCPI and remained active in the cement industry long after his retirement.

CCPI believes in the durability of cement and concrete structures and their ability to withstand the test of time. Since its establishment in 2001, the John S. Farmer scholarship has supported 15 students in their academic journeys at the College of Engineering and will continue to do so for many years to come.

College of Engineering Dean Peter Crouch said, “The Construction industry continues to be of paramount importance to the future of Hawai‘i and the College of Engineering is key to supplying the engineering workforce to that industry.  This gift ensures that the long time support by CCPI to the College will continue in perpetuity to help propel great students from the College into the construction industry in Hawai‘i.”
