Wai‘ale‘ale Project – Kaua‘i Community College

  • Selina Lutao and daughter Oshyyn

In high school, Selina Lutao didn’t think college was an option. She already had a daughter, Oshyyn, and their future looked challenged. But that changed when Selina’s school counselor at Waimea High told her about the Kaua‘i Community College Wai‘ale‘ale Project.

Donor Jim Lally helped start this innovative program to encourage non-college bound high school students and adults to continue their education. Designed to remove barriers to entering and succeeding in college, the program provides financial aid and ongoing student support.

Thanks to Jim’s vision and generosity, people of all ages on Kaua‘i previously unable to attend UH, now can.

The Wai‘ale‘ale Project has enabled Selina to pursue a career in the culinary arts, opened doors to better jobs and has given her far more options in preparing for her future.

She and Oshyyn now have a seat at the table.
