Automotive tech students, like these Hawai‘i CC students, are trained for careers as general mechanics in a service station or auto dealer’s shop, or as a specialty mechanics or specialists on engine tune-ups or electrical systems.
The Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association (HADA) has pledged $25,900 to support aspiring automotive technicians on five University of Hawai‘i campuses statewide.
The HADA-coordinated gift will support five years of $1,000 Auto Tech Scholarships at Leeward CC, Honolulu CC, Hawai‘i CC, UH Maui College and Kauai CC.
“The HADA Scholarship will help our students become successful in their class work and in the lab,” said UH Maui College Automotive Mechanics Technology (AMT) Instructor Thomas Hussey. He continued, “These scholarships will help pay for tuition, books, and required items like safety glasses, clothing and tools. This scholarship will help our students become Hawai‘i’s future auto technicians.”
Scholarship award criteria include:
- Minimum 3.0 GPA
- Some degree of financial need
- Hawai‘i resident
- Preference shall be given to an applicant who is currently interning or employed at a new-car dealership
