CTAHR Waimānalo Research Station

The reason things grow so well in Waimānalo is because we get lots of sun … and lots of rain. Right now all the classes and events we hold at our station get lots of sun and rain, too. Please help us put a roof on our learning pavilion. Mahalo!

Growing a Community Gathering Space

The College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) Waimānalo Research Station station has 127 acres of land growing organic, sustainable and regular crops from corn to papaya. Our fields of ornamentals bring style and color, our food plants and fruit trees nourish bodies, and cover crops enrich the soil. We also have apiaries, where we study honeybee pests and help farmers with crop pollination. All of this helps us serve as a valuable teaching station and contribute to research that helps Hawai‘i’s growers.

Serving our community

  • Our aquaponics experts help families to be more self-sufficient in food production. We give practical, hands-on learning to elementary and high schools, Native Hawaiian groups and Master Gardeners.
  • Undergrad and grad students from UH take classes here in environmental ecosystems, weed science, agronomy and organic crop production. Here, they receive practical experience to complement what they study in classrooms and labs.
  • Last year we taught more than 2,500 people from keiki to kupuna at our station, and the numbers are growing every year.

Learning Pavilion Needs a Roof

After our original classroom collapsed in a 2011 storm, we were fortunate to receive funding to build the base and columns of our Waimānalo Learning Pavilion, which will be able to accommodate 100 students at a time. However, the funding did not extend to roofing.

Join Us

With your support we can build a roof and be able to bring our community together in a beautiful space to learn how to grow food – without the sun and rain beating down on them.
