Solomon Waiau Kaulukukui Sr.
Former UH student-athlete Solomon Waiau Kaulukukui Sr. was an inspiration to his family and his community. When he passed awayat age 90, his family and friends established a scholarship to help the next generation of student-athletes on the football team.
Born on August 13, 1923, Solomon was Malina and Charles Kaulukukui Sr.’s 12th child of 15. He attended Punahou School and then the University of Hawai‘i, where he was a four-year letterman in baseball and football. A born leader, he captained both sports.
Kaulukukui received his teaching certificate from UH and became a counselor and coach at Farrington High School. He then enlisted with the Hawai‘i National Guard, served in Vietnam and retired as a colonel.
Kaulukukui then earned a master’s in education and was instrumental in starting a Hawaiian Studies program in Honolulu district elementary schools in 1981. The program later expanded statewide.
In recognition of his contributions to our community and UH, he was inducted into the University of Hawai‘i Sports Circle of Honor in 2005, joining his brother, Tommy Kaulukukui Sr.
