Center for Cardiovascular Research at JABSOM

Exciting research is underway at the Center for Cardiovascular Research (CCR) at UH Mānoa’s John A. Burns School of Medicine. Researchers are collaborating with an international network of investigators looking for greater understanding and improved prevention and treatment of heart disease. But budgetary limitations on the NIH have made it much more difficult to obtain research grants, which is limiting the growth of the CCR.

One partial solution to the difficulty that most researchers have in obtaining Federal grants is to develop technologies that provide the foundation of new companies or licensed intellectual property. Dr. Ralph Shohet, professor of medicine and CCR director, believes Honolulu is well positioned to develop a biotechnology industry around UH research.

“I went to medical school at UC San Diego at a time when the biotech industry was just beginning there. Now San Diego has a huge infrastructure of such companies. With Hawai‘i’s natural beauty, fiber optic communications, and jet travel, I would love to see the center develop as a gathering place that connects Asian and U.S. science. And I’d also like to see a vibrant biotech industry to bring our children back to Hawai‘i for good jobs.”

Thoughtful philanthropy will sustain and increase the capacity of the CCR to understand and treat heart disease. Donations can be directed to endowed support, new faculty, specific research and student support.
