Coach Estrella attended UH Hilo after his graduation from St. Joseph High School (Hilo) until transferring to UH Mānoa where he played shortstop on the Rainbow baseball team for three years under the renowned Coach Les Murakami. He received his B.ED in 1974 and then in 1976 he earned his M.ED.

As a coach, Coach Estrella is known for his passion and wisdom as well as his desire to make an impact on not only his players’ games, but their lives as well.

Coach Estrella and his wife, Geri, have two children—Brandon and Allyson.

The Opportunity

Head Baseball Coach Joey Estrella will pass the program torch this June, leaving a shining legacy for future athletes and the program.

The Joseph and Harriet Estrella Scholarship Endowment will honor Coach Estrella’s parents and support student-athletes in the Vulcans Baseball Program who wish to pursue their higher education at the UH Hilo.

Coach Estrella has provided a solid foundation for program success and leaves a legacy of core values, including commitment, hard work and perseverance.

Vulcan Men’s Baseball Program

UH Hilo baseball

The UH Hilo Men’s Baseball Program flourished for more than three decades under the leadership and guidance of head coach Joey Estrella. Coach Estrella joined the Vulcans staff in 1976 and boasts the longest tenure within the department.

For 17 years the Vulcans participated in the NAIA where they appeared in three World Series and captured five District Championships, until moving to the NCAA Division I level in 1993. In 2006 they moved to the Division II level. With a national ranking as high as number 6, the team has collected numerous conference, regional and national honors.

Community Contribution

In addition to its athletic successes, the program is recognized as a leader in the community. It received the prestigious 2007 State Outstanding Organization of the Year for Special Olympics Hawai‘i award and the 2012 Special Olympics East Hawai‘i award for Outstanding Organization. The Vulcans have been involved with Special Olympics for the last thirty-six years, participating in their annual area singles bowling competition as volunteers each year. The team also actively participates in the UH Hilo Blood Bank of Hawai‘i Drive and the Vulcans-Hawai‘i Baseball School.
