Scholarships Supporting UH American Studies Graduate Students Now Available
(Honolulu, Hawaiʻi) - The one-year anniversary of the death of Dr. Glen Grant on June 19 was commemorated with a gift to the Glen Grant Endowed Scholarship Fund to reach its endowment goal of $35,000. The fund can now begin providing scholarships to assist graduate students in the University of Hawaiʻi American Studies Department.
Dr. Grant was a popular teacher, historian, writer and storyteller. For more than 30 years, Dr. Grant dedicated himself as a professor of American Studies at UH Mānoa, Kapi’olani Community College, and Tokai International University—where at the time of his passing he served as vice chancellor. His lifelong fascination with the supernatural blossomed in the fertile multicultural environment of the Islands on his arrival in 1969. His classes quickly swelled to capacity as students spread the word about the dynamic instructor who spiced his lectures with “chicken skin” tales and costumed characterizations of historical characters.
During his three decades in Hawai’i, through his students and their families, as well as his own studies, Dr. Grant immersed himself in the history and folklore of the people of Hawaiʻi. His tales captured the public’s imagination in a series of best-selling books, articles, walking tours, storytelling programs, lectures, and radio and television shows.
Glen Grant Scholarship recipients must be enrolled full-time in the graduate program at the University of Hawai’i’s American Studies Department and have a minimum GPA of 3.5, some degree of financial need (though not necessarily as defined by federal guidelines) and a field of study in multiculturalism in Hawai’i or Japanese Americans.
