Aloha kakou. O Nicole Kiana Oka ko’u inoa. No Kailua mai au. Aloha everyone, my name is Nicole Kiana Oka and I am from Kailua, O‘ahu.

I am a proud alumnus of Kamehameha Schools Kapalama and a grateful and humbled recipient of the 2013 Regents Scholarship here at UH Mānoa.

When I was selected, my ‘ohana was ecstatic. After all, this scholarship eased my financial burden and gave me the ability to take advantage of other opportunities, like leadership positions in clubs, networking with professionals and participating in startup business competitions.

I am currently a sophomore working towards a dual major in international business and finance, and a minor in Japanese. I am also a direct admit to the prestigious Shidler College of Business and an honors student.

After I graduate, I plan to attend law school. My main career goal is to assist other Native Hawaiians like myself, because without the support I received, I could and would be in a very different place.

I was expected to pay for my college education from an early age and I was worried about finances, but knew I would work hard. Being a recipient of the Regents Scholarship changed everything. Instead of worrying about making payments and signing for loans, I am able to focus on my studies, join business clubs, and care for my residents as a resident assistant in the Gateway House dormitories. I also work as the assistant to the director of a private developer for affordable housing here in Hawai‘i.

I am able to attend an incredible university that is also close to my ‘ohana. Your generosity has allowed me to enjoy many of the opportunities that have come my way, and I have a responsibility to all of you to do my best, not just here at UH, but in everything I do. What you all have given me is invaluable: an exceptional undergraduate education right here in our beloved Hawai‘i.

Mahalo piha to each and every one of you who have made scholarships like mine possible. I want all of you to know you have personally made a difference in my life. I would not be standing here in front of you if it were not for your generosity and kindness. I don't know how I can ever repay you, but I promise you that I will make the most of this opportunity, and I will make every effort to make you proud. I also promise to pay this forward, and do my best to give future students the same amazing opportunities that I have received.

Mahalo nui loa.
