  • JCCIH supports Hawai‘i CC students

At a mahalo luncheon last month, members of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Hawai‘i presented a check for $10,000 to Hawai‘i Community College. This generous donation was made using proceeds from the 18th Annual “A Taste of Hilo” that took place in October 2016.

The donation continues the long tradition of support Hawai‘i CC has received from JCCIH. Since the fund was created with UH Foundation in 1999, JCCIH has donated $126,516. This allows Hawai‘i CC to provide student scholarships, program improvements, college-wide benefits, and faculty and staff development opportunities.

The mahalo luncheon was held at Hawai‘i CC’s Bamboo Hale fine dining restaurant. Culinary Arts students prepared a delicious Japanese-style buffet that included handcrafted crab tofu; warabi salad with abalone ishiyaki and dried seafood; soy-braised short ribs; mochi two ways; and more. Students in our Agriculture program grew much of the produce that was used for the meal.

Several students who received scholarships attended and shared how the donation helped them achieve their academic goals. Attendees also took turns sharing their favorite memories of the collaborations between JCCIH and Hawai‘i CC. Mahalo to JCCIH for being such a strong supporter of Hawai‘i CC!
