(Honolulu, Hawaiʻi) - The David H. Murdock Institute for Business and Culture recently donated $50,000 to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa through the UH Foundation for flood relief efforts at Hamilton Library. The institute is the private foundation of David H. Murdock, chairman and CEO of Dole Food Company and Castle & Cooke, Inc.

In this great time of need at Hamilton Library, we are especially grateful to Mr. Murdock for his very generous gift, said UHM University Librarian Diane Perushek. Our equipment and refurbishment needs span maps and CD-ROMS to furniture and computers. This gift will help us in many areas including equipment, computers and scholarly resources which are all important in helping our faculty and students use our collections.

Volunteers and staff at Hamilton Library continue their recovery efforts of the damage caused by the flash flooding that occurred October 30, 2004. The flood destroyed the Library and Information Science program as well as the acquisitions, cataloging, GovDocs and map collection departments. Also lost in the flood were all library file servers.

On January 3, 2005, the Hamilton Library Addition reopened to the public. This provided students and the general public access to the Science/Technology book stacks, periodicals and the Hamilton CLIC (student computer) lab on the 2nd floor. However, due to continuing lack of power and flood damage, Phase I, Phase II and other sections of the library remain closed. The library’s paging system will continue for materials located in these areas.

Donations for Hamilton Library’s flood disaster relief are being accepted through a library enrichment fund with the University of Hawaiʻi Foundation. The Foundation has established two online giving web site pages to accept monetary donations in support of flood relief efforts and damages. One account is the Library Enrichment & Flood Relief fund and the other account is the UH Mānoa Flood Damage Fund, for general campus-wide support for flood relief:
