(Honolulu, Hawaiʻi) — The First Hawaiian Bank Foundation has made a $100,000 gift to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene (SONDH) to create the "Cancer Nursing Care Simulation Initiative". This is one of several innovative education initiatives that will provide student and practicing nurses with a "simulated" environment to build their skills in caring for both pediatric and adult oncology patients.
"This gift from First Hawaiian Bank Foundation recognizes that nurses set the tone in the health care setting for those living with cancer and their families. A skilled and patient-focused nurse is critical to ensure that the patient and family feel cared for. Simulated care environments allow learners to gain experience and confidence without risking patient safety," said Mary G. Boland, dean, School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene.
"The University of Hawaiʻi has an outstanding nursing school and our investment in state-of-the-art technology should assist the school to remain one of the most advanced in the U.S.," said Don Horner, chairman and CEO, First Hawaiian Bank.
The gift will support the creation of curriculum and equip a designated area within the Hawaiʻi Translational Health Science and Simulation Center on the Mānoa campus.
The school is bringing together an interdisciplinary development group of nurses and related care providers to create the initiative to focus on caring for patients and families throughout their treatment journey.
The long-term outcome of the Cancer Nursing Care Simulation Initiative is to benefit Hawaiʻi residents by providing access to quality health care through a highly skilled nursing workforce.
