HONOLULU—The University of Hawai‘i Athletics Department and Nā Koa Football Club are pleased to announce a multi-year gift in excess of $1,000,000 from the Waterhouse Charitable Trust, one of the largest in the department’s history. The gift will most notably support the football program in the areas of: summer school, nutritional supplements, and cost of attendance stipends.

The gift was announced Tuesday at a press conference at the University of Hawai‘i Athletics Department, which included President David Lassner, UH-Mānoa Chancellor Robert Bley-Vroman, Athletics Director David Matlin, UH football head coach Norm Chow, and Waterhouse trustee Stan Mukai.

“UH Athletics is thankful and indebted for the tremendous support from the Waterhouse Trust,” Matlin said. “Their generosity and vision has enabled us to address the Cost of Attendance initiative which will benefit the well-being of our student-athletes. As a founding member of Na Koa, Alec Waterhouse was one of the Rainbow Warriors’ biggest fans and this generous donation will not only support the football program which he loved, but all of our student-athletes.”

“Alec Waterhouse loved UH football and established the Waterhouse Charitable Trust as a way to continue his support of his beloved sport,” Mukai said. “I'm pleased, this morning, to represent the Trust, in showing our support of the Rainbow Warrior football program and the UH Athletics Department’s Cost of Attendance Program. I believe Alec would be pleased to know that the Trust is directly helping student-athletes have an even better experience at UH and also increasing UH’s ability to compete at the highest levels.”

Nā Koa Football Club and the Athletics Department will allocate, in support of the football program: $400,000 for summer school tuition; $85,000 for Cost of Attendance stipends; supplemental meals and nutritional enhancements; strength and conditioning equipment; and additional program needs.

This academic year, UH will allocate $256,100 – an average of $1,000 per scholarship student-athlete – to support Cost of Attendance. Cost of Attendance is defined as the sum of tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and other expenses, which are unique to each university and determined by federal financial aid guidelines as the estimated cost of completing a full-year as a full-time student. The UH-Mānoa Financial Aid Office has determined the full Cost of Attendance as $3,925.

The NCAA passed new legislation allowing its member schools to provide Cost of Attendance stipends beginning Aug. 1, 2015. UH will receive $55,000 from the NCAA to support Cost of Attendance.

The Athletics Department implemented the supplemental meal program in 2014, which has provided one meal per student-athlete on practice days. The program benefits all student-athletes, whether or not they receive aid.
