This December Hoku and Founder founder members explored Moku o Loʻe. Over the years, this small island in Kaneohe Bay has evolved from a place of utility for native Hawaiian fisherman to a multifaceted "Coconut Island," a place of grand Luʻau and elaborate parties, peaceful family retreats, informal political summits, and now to the disciplined study of marine biology.
This holiday event celebrated the Pauley Foundation gift that made the Hawaiʻi Institute for Marine Biology (HIMB) program possible at this location. Additionally, the event coincided with the publishing of Moku o Loʻe: A History of Coconut Island.
Everyone on the island from dolphins, whales, and a fish called bubbles, were quick to show our guests how the important work by Coconut Island staff contributes to finding answers to global warming and sustainability questions.
