More than 200 donors and friends joined School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) faculty and students to celebrate Chinese New Year and learn more about the leading-edge research taking place on the UH Mānoa campus.
Guests gathered at C-MORE Hale, a state-of-the-art, LEED platinum facility that supports research on marine microbes, from molecular biology to ecology. Students led tours of the striking facility, so guests could learn more about the exciting research happening in this building.
The Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education (C-MORE) is one of the interdisciplinary centers of SOEST. Its mission is to facilitate a greater understanding of microorganisms in the sea, ranging from the genetic basis of marine microbial life to their ecological place in the marine environment. The new knowledge that is gained will be used to improve our understanding of the world we live in, to inform policy makers and to educate the public at large. The Center uses the ship Kilo Moana to conduct a portion of its revolutionary research.
After the tours, the Chinese New Year celebration began with a traditional lion dance blessing to bring good luck to all for the new water dragon year.
