Marilyn Dunlap creates a new fund to support Hawaiian Monk Seal Research at the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research
Marilyn Dunlap, associate director of the Pacific Biosciences Research Center (PBRC) and director of the Biological Electron Microscope Facility, has donated $45,000 to the University of Hawai‘i Foundation to create a new fund supporting Hawaiian Monk Seal research at the University of Hawai‘i’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) in honor of her late husband, DB Dunlap, and his tireless work researching and protecting Hawaiian Monk Seals on Oahu.

Sangik Jung and his wife Kyungsin Lee have donated $50,000 to support the International Program at UH West Oahu.
Rose and Raymond Tseng Terrace Dedication
In recognition of their generosity, the formerly known Ho`oulu Terrace at UH Hilo was re-named the Rose and Raymond Tseng Terrace at a special dedication on March 13th. More than 80 friends in the community and UH Hilo faculty members were present to celebrate the re-named space with Chancellor Emerita Rose Tseng in attendance.
Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Hawaii Donates $10,000 to Hawai‘i Community College
At a mahalo luncheon on February 28, members of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Hawai‘i presented a check for $10,000 to Hawai‘i Community College. The generous donation was made using proceeds from the 19th Annual “A Taste of Hilo” that took place in October 2017.
American Savings Bank Builds On 40 Year Old Scholarship Endowment With $65,000 Gift
Building on its longtime support of education in Hawai‘i, American Savings Bank (ASB) has donated $65,000 to the American Savings Bank Endowed Scholarship Fund. The company established this scholarship at the University of Hawai‘i in 1978. Over the last 40 years, this scholarship has been awarded 55 times.
University of Hawai‘i Foundation President & CEO Donna Vuchinich Planning her Retirement
After 14 years at the helm, University of Hawai‘i Foundation President and CEO Donna Vuchinich is planning her retirement from her position. She will serve in her current role until a successor is named and assist with the transition to new leadership.
Dr. Michele Carbone recognized with Endowed Chair in Cancer Biology
The University of Hawai‘i has awarded the William and Ellen Melohn Chair in Cancer Biology to Dr. Michele Carbone in recognition of his research in cancer genetics. This endowed chair was created with a generous gift from the Melohn family to the University of Hawai‘i Cancer Center.
$700,000 Funds Professorship Honoring Dr. Satoru Izutsu
To thank and recognize Dr. Satoru Izutsu for the many lives he has touched throughout the world during his career in medicine, Dr. Thomas Kosasa donated $500,000 to establish the Satoru Izutsu, PhD Endowed Professorship of Medical Education at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) and an additional $100,000 that can be used immediately. To build on the impact of the new endowment, Dr. Izutsu contributed an additional $100,000.
$200,000 Gift to 'Imiloa Astronomy Center Honors Patricia Ann Weber Lee
The prominent native garden in front of the restaurant at the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center has been named in memory of Patricia Ann Weber Lee through a $200,000 gift made by her husband, Francis Kainoa Lee, and their sons, Kain
Walmart Foundation supports "Cooking up a Rainbow Food Truck"
The University of Hawai‘i Foundation/Kapi‘olani Community College received a $50,000 Walmart Foundation grant to support Kapi‘olani CC’s “Cooking up a Rainbow Food Truck.” This award is helping to fund the outfitting of a custom food truck that will be used to deliver nutritious, balanced meals to children eligible for free and reduced lunches during summer break. The team using the truck will also provide healthy and affordable cooking lessons and obesity prevention education in rural communities.
Matsuda endowment recognized at halftime
The establishment of the Paul Y. Matsuda Endowed Scholarship for UH Hilo Men's Basketball was recognized at halftime of the Vulcans 1/27/18 basketball game against Point Loma.
