HONOLULU — First Insurance Company of Hawaiʻi (FICOH), Hawaiʻi's oldest and largest insurance company, has established a $35,000 endowed scholarship for full-time and part-time students enrolled at the UH Mānoa Shidler College of Business.

The new scholarship is one in a series of gifts FICOH has made to the College. In 2007, the company established a $1 million First Insurance Company Distinguished Professorship to recruit and retain faculty in the area of risk management. In addition, FICOH has been the title sponsor of Business Night for the past seven years.

"As a local business, we have a personal interest in fostering the development of Hawaiʻi's future business talent. An investment in the next generation of business leaders is an investment in our long-term success," said Allen Uyeda, president and CEO of FICOH. "With our endowed scholarship, we can support the students whose ideas and innovation will one day move First Insurance and Hawaiʻi's larger business community forward."

FICOH has been providing coverage to Hawaiʻi's families and businesses since 1911. A member of the Japan-Based Tokio Marine Group, FICOH enjoys an "A" (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best Company, whose ratings are widely recognized as a benchmark of an insurer's financial strength. FICOH has also been named to the Ward's top 50 list recognizing the nation's best property and casualty insurance companies.

Today, FICOH employs more than 300 insurance professionals and distributes its products through 29 independent general agencies.

"First Insurance Company of Hawaiʻi CEO Allen Uyeda has been a great corporate partner in the development of our young people for several decades," said Vance Roley, dean of the Shidler College of Business. "The FICOH scholarship will help us attract promising business students with leadership qualities, and help them achieve their academic goals."

Donna Vuchinich, president and CEO of the University of Hawaiʻi Foundation added, "We are extremely grateful for FICOH's continuing support and investment in our students and programs." She concluded, "They are a wonderful example of local business partnering with our University to build excellence in the workforce."
