(Honolulu, Hawaiʻi) — Local insurance firms Island Insurance and Atlas Insurance have teamed up to make a $15,000 gift to support UH West Oʻahu's Certificate in Insurance and Risk Management Program. Their gift will support the operations and staff of this new program designed to meet the national growing need for skilled insurance professionals.

"We are proud to support the development of this ground-breaking educational program," said Tyler Tokioka, President of the Island Insurance and Atlas Insurance Foundations. "It is important not only to our industry but the community as well that we develop the solid foundation needed to cultivate a skilled and talented workforce."

The Certificate in Insurance and Risk Management provides training in risk management, personal and commercial insurance and prepares students for the licensure examination.

"We are very excited about our growing partnership with Hawaiʻi's insurance and risk management industry," said Gene Awakuni, Chancellor, UH West Oʻahu. "Despite placement rates close to 100 percent, the annual yield of graduates from the nation's risk management and insurance programs meets only 10 to 15 percent of industry needs. UHWO is committed to providing an education that will help our students find meaningful work within high-demand industries. Our students will be prepared to fulfill the needs of the industry for qualified professionals."
