(Maui, Hawaiʻi) — Recent high school graduates from Maui can soon apply for a new annual scholarship to attend Kapiʻolani Community College. The Kapiʻolani Community College Maui Island Culinary Arts Scholarship will support a student who wishes to pursue a degree or certificate in the Culinary Arts program at Kapiʻolani CC.
This new fund can be used for all costs associated with attendance including tuition, fees, books, supplies, meals, housing, and one round trip inter-island airfare. It will provide aid to the student for two consecutive years toward successful completion of an A.S. degree or certificate. Students who attended Henry Perrine Baldwin High School on Maui will be given first preference to receive this scholarship, followed by students from any other Maui island high school.
The Kapiʻolani Community College Maui Island Culinary Arts Scholarship was established with a $25,000 anonymous gift. The donors believe that Maui students who attend college on a neighbor island will benefit from a broader educational experience and learn a great deal by being immersed in a different environment. These students will also gain insight into different cultures as the student body at Kapiʻolani CC is notably diverse. According to the 2009 International Education Annual Report, more than 1,600 students enrolled at Kapiʻolani CC were from a range of countries including Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, Pakistan, Brazil, South Africa, Turkey, and Egypt.
The donors focused on supporting students in the culinary arts program in part because of its successful track record, including its team's recent winning of the gold medal at the Western Regional competitions where they competed against close to 200 culinary schools. The team then went on to win the National competition which proved Kapiʻolani CC to be the best Culinary Institute in the United States.
