Professor and alumna Jenny Teruya endows Masters of Accounting Scholarship and alumnus Stuart Matsuda funds business scholarship in honor of sibling
(Honolulu, Hawaiʻi) — The University of Hawaiʻi Foundation is proud to announce the establishment of two new $50,000 endowed scholarships at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Shidler College of Business. Together with matching funds from Jay Shidler’s $25 million gift last year, each scholarship endowment totals $50,000.
Masters of Accounting Endowed Scholarship Fund
Director and Professor of the School of Accountancy Jenny Teruya and husband Alfred established the Master’s of Accounting Endowed Scholarship Fund to support students who have the potential to achieve a master degree in the accounting field, but lack financial means.
Alfred and Jenny Teruya have been involved in Hawaiʻi’s public school system for many years. Alfred recently retired from McKinley High School after completing 30-years of service for the Department of Education. Jenny’s commitment to higher education grew out of her own educational experiences and pride for her alma mater. She received her Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Accounting degrees from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, and later earned a PhD in Accounting from the University of Arizona. In 1998, Jenny joined the College as assistant professor of accounting at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Today, she is an associate professor of accounting and the director of the School of Accountancy.
"Both of us are educators and value the opportunities education provides our youth," says Jenny Teruya. "We have talked about establishing scholarships ’one of these days’, however, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to take advantage of the Shidler match; it allowed us to have a bigger impact than we could afford on our own."
Todd Kiyo Matsuda Endowed Scholarship
Stuart Matsuda and his wife Michelle established the Todd Kiyo Matsuda Endowed Scholarship in honor of Stuart’s younger brother Todd Kiyo Matsuda, who passed away in 1980. According to Stuart, Todd was a recent high school graduate and had a great future ahead of him. The Matsuda’s felt endowing a scholarship is an appropriate way to honor his brother who had so much potential.
Stuart received his BBA in 1986 from the Shidler College of Business and currently lives in California. As co-founder and director of L.A. Capital Management, Stuart manages all equity trading activity and is a key member of the portfolio management team. Previously, Stuart was a vice president and principal at Wilshire Associates where he also served as Wilshire Asset Management’s Director of Trading.
"Not many alums think about endowing a scholarship in the prime of their careers," said V. Vance Roley, Dean of the Shidler College of Business. "Both Jenny and Stuart felt it was the right time to give back and make an impact on the lives of many students today and tomorrow."
