(Honolulu, Hawaiʻi) — Dr. Lawrence K. W. Tseu of Honolulu has established the Dr. & Mrs. Lawrence K.W. (BoHing Chan) Tseu Endowed Scholarship in Nursing at the UH Mānoa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene (SONDH) with a $100,000 gift. This fund will provide scholarship assistance to students in the Masters Entry Program in Nursing.
"My wife always said we were so fortunate and blessed and that we must share those blessings with others who are in need. That has always and continues to guide me, and I strongly believe in leading by example," said Dr. Tseu. "I am very grateful that I am able to assist in making quality nursing education accessible to students from all backgrounds."
Dr. Tseu was named Outstanding Philanthropist by the Hawaiʻi chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals in 2006. He currently serves on the board of regents for Chaminade University and the University of Oxford. He has served on numerous other boards including the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Friends of the Cancer Research Center, Salvation Army, East-West Center Foundation, Friends of the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum, and Palolo Chinese Home.
"In memory of his late wife BoHing Tseu, Dr. Tseu is joining with UH Mānoa to transform nursing education in Hawaiʻi," said Mary Boland, dean, School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene. "Together, we are partnering to ensure that nurses are prepared to deliver patient-centered high quality care and assume leadership roles in the redesign of the health care system."
The scholarship supports adult second-career students to enter nursing. Scholarship recipient criteria include:
Recipients must be full-time, graduate students in the Masters Entry Program in Nursing.
Recipients are graduates of a Hawaiʻi public high school.
"Dr. Tseu has distinguished himself as a compassionate humanitarian who has dedicated much time and energy to community reinvestment," said Donna Vuchinich, president and CEO, UH Foundation. "This gift builds on his philanthropic legacy and will greatly help nursing students for many years to come."
