David Karl and Edward DeLong awarded $4.2M to pursue high risk research in marine microbial ecology

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has awarded Dr. David Karl and Dr. Edward DeLong, both UH Mānoa professors in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) individual grants totaling $4.2M to support their marine research. These awards are part of the Moore Foundation’s national Marine Microbiology Initiative that awarded 16 scientists from 14 different institutions a total of up to $35 million over five years to pursue pioneering research in the field of marine microbial ecology.

Kresge Foundation $460,000 Award to UH Mānoa

Kamitaki Family Establishes Scholarship at UH Mānoa Shidler College of Business

HONOLULU – The Kamitaki family, which operates the HouseMart family of Ace Hardware and Ben Franklin Crafts Stores, has established a $35,000 endowed scholarship in honor of their parents, Tadami and Kimei Kamitaki. The Tadami and Kimei Kamitaki Endowed Memorial Scholarship will provide support to undergraduate students attending the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

CPB President and CEO John C. Dean Leads Support for UH Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship

HONOLULU - Business leader, venture capitalist, and philanthropist John Dean has pledged $75,000 to the Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship (PACE) at the Shidler College of Business. $3M Puts Pan-STARRS Back on Track to Build Most Powerful System in Existence

HONOLULU - The cancellation of earmarks by the U.S. Congress in 2011 left Pan-STARRS, one of Hawai‘i’s flagship programs, $10M short of the funds needed to complete the historic 2-telescope system — and on the verge of folding. 

Thanks to an anonymous $3M gift, Pan-STARRS will survive the cuts and continue astronomy research of global importance.

First Insurance Company increases its scholarship endowment at UH Shidler College of Business to $100k

First Insurance Company of Hawai‘i (FICOH), the oldest and largest insurance company headquartered in Hawai‘i, has increased its scholarship endowment to $100,000 at the UH Mānoa Shidler College of Business. Building on an initial endowment of $35,000 established in the spring of 2012, the First Insurance Company of Hawai‘i Endowed Scholarship for Excellence provides scholarships to two students enrolled at the College each year.

Improving Maui's Native Hawaiian Mothers and Children's Oral Health

The HMSA Foundation has awarded a $100,000 grant to support the UH Maui College “Improving Oral Health for Native Hawaiian Prenatal Mothers and Children” demonstration project.  The program will provide educational sessions and oral health screenings for the 3rd and 7th grade students, and women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant at Maui schools, churches, and health fairs, while
