$3M Puts Pan-STARRS Back on Track to Build Most Powerful System in Existence

HONOLULU - The cancellation of earmarks by the U.S. Congress in 2011 left Pan-STARRS, one of Hawai‘i’s flagship programs, $10M short of the funds needed to complete the historic 2-telescope system — and on the verge of folding. 

Thanks to an anonymous $3M gift, Pan-STARRS will survive the cuts and continue astronomy research of global importance.

Improving Maui's Native Hawaiian Mothers and Children's Oral Health

Maui - The HMSA Foundation has awarded a $100,000 grant to support the UH Maui College “Improving Oral Health for Native Hawaiian Prenatal Mothers and Children” demonstration project.  The program will provide educational sessions and oral health screenings for the 3rd and 7th grade students, and women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant at Maui schools, churches, and health fairs,

American Savings Bank Donates $30k to the UH Entrepreneurship Center

HONOLULU — American Savings Bank (American), one of Hawai‘i’s leading financial institutions, donated $30,000 to become the title sponsor of the 2013 UH Business Plan Competition organized by the Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship (PACE) at the UH Mānoa Shidler College of Business.

CEO of Johnson Machinery Gives $1 Million to Shidler College of Business

The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Shidler College of Business has received $1 million from William R. Johnson, Jr., president and CEO of Johnson Machinery Co., to establish the William R. Johnson, Jr. Study Abroad Endowment. The endowment will provide international study abroad scholarships for undergraduate students attending the Shidler College of Business.

Largest gift to Windward CC Will Make Education Accessible to the Community

Windward CC - The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation has awarded a matching grant of $922,815.33 for Paipai o Ko‘olau, a new initiative at Windward Community College to increase college access and completion. Paipai o Ko‘olau means "the support or encouragement of the Ko‘olau." Paipai refers to a supporting structure and can also be thought of as the mountains holding up the island.
